How to Achieve Your Ideal Shade of Blonde

Icy Blonde

Singer Gwen Stefani's icy blonde hue pairs great with pale lipstick—but does require quite a bit of upkeep and the perfect mix of product.

Existing level: 7

1. Mix formulas. Formula 1: Matrix V-Lite De-Dusted Lightener + 20-volume developer. Formula 2: Matrix V-Lite De-Dusted Lightener + 30-volume developer. Formula 3: Matrix Color Sync SPV (Sheer Pastel Violet) + developer.
2. Apply Formula 1 to root area and Formula 2 to mid-lengths and ends.
3. Lift to pale yellow, shampoo, condition and dry hair to 80%. (If necessary, rinse hair and apply a second batch of lightener to achieve the desired level of lift.)
4. Tone with Formula 3 and process up to 20 minutes.

Pale Golden Blonde

Actress Scaret Johansson's golden blonde color is achievable with the perfect mix of colors, and continues to look great, even after it's grown out a bit.

Existing level: 5-8

1. Mix Formula 1: L’Oréal Professionnel Platinium Blue + 30 volume developer. Lift to pale yellow.
2. Mix Formula 2: L’Oréal Professionnel Luocolor equal parts 9 + 8.03 + 20-volume developer. Apply from roots to ends.

Strawberry Blonde

Actress Bryce Dallas Howard's strawberry blonde look is fresh and approachable, and transitions well with the seasons.

1. Pre-lighten to pale yellow with desired powder lightener.
2. Mix formula: Redken Shades EQ 30 grams 9AA +10 grams 9RB + developer.
3. Apply to wet hair at the shampoo bowl and process for 10 minutes.

Ombré Blonde

Super model Lily Aldridge's mane is darker at the roots, shifting to blonde at the ends. The ombré look has been trending for a while, but it's easier than ever to achieve, with the right mix of hair colors.

Existing level: 6

1. Mix Formula 1: Clairol Kaleidacolors Bleach (Blue) + 40 volume. Backcomb all sections of the hair and apply the product to the ends that are sticking out. Make sure to keep the bleach wet and that the strands are fully saturated with product.
2. Mix Formula 2: Shades EQ Gloss 7NB + Shades EQ processing solution.
3. Apply toner from roots to ends on shampooed, towel-dried hair.

Bronde (Brown and Blonde)

The "bronde" term has been popping up a lot lately to describe clients that want to be blonde, but not too blonde. Actress Jennifer Aniston, who has long been known for her envy-inducing locks, nails the hue.

Existing level: 7

1. Mix formulas. Formula 1: Clairol Professional Cream Color 9/A + 20 volume developer. Formula 2: Clairol Kaleidacolors Bleach (Beige) with 30 volume developer. Formula 3: Clairol Color Gloss 8N + developer.
2. Foil in Formula 1 and 2 and apply Formula 3 in between the packets on all remaining strands of hair.
