Fall Hair Color Formulas

Learn how to transition your clients into the Fall season.

By , About.com Guide

I hate to say it, but Fall is here! That means it's time to transition your clients hair color accordingly. No drastic changes needed, but as tans begin to fade and the clothes get heavier, you'll want to introduce your clients to rich color that will compliment their Fall look.

Luckily, anything goes these days in the land of hair color, but a few trends definitely stand out. Below I've broken down some helpful tips and techniques to help you update your clients look for Fall.

1. Toning Down the Bright Blondes

I don't know about you, but my blonde clients dread the word low-lights. Most of them want to be as blonde as possible. That usually means walking the fine line of making them happy, and keeping their hair healthy.

A great way to transition these clients from Summer blonde to Fall blonde is by skipping the lowlights, (which can look too dark and muddy on porous blonde hair) and try and all-over gloss instead. This will give them depth and contrast without making the hair too dark and the best part is, they'll still feel like a blonde bombshell.

Try this easy formula that's a go-to when transitioning into Fall.

Mix equal parts Wella Color Touch

8/03 + 7/3 with 1.9% Color Touch developer

2. Pumping Up the Brunettes

Brown shades are an obvious option for the cooler months but be careful not to take your clients too dark as fairer skin can look washed out. Taking your clients just a shade or two darker will have them all set for Fall.

Start with a protein treatment to even out the porosity and repair any damage that the Summer months have caused. This will give you an even pallet for depositing color which will keep the shade rich and true.

You can also check out CHI Infra Environmental No Lift Cream Color. This color line offers the benefits of filling the hair while coloring, turning a two-step process into one.

Mix equal parts CHI Infra

NBR (Natural Brown) + CBR (Chocolate Brown)

Process for 15 min

3. Redheads Rule

Red hair color is a major trend for Fall. From the Fall runways to celebrities, different shades of crimson have been popping up all over the place.

Red hair color can scare the hell out any level-headed stylist, as it's known to act somewhat unpredictable. But for any of you that have been scared away from doing red hair color in the past, have no fear, as technologies are getting more advanced and color lines are getting smarter.

Tips to keep in mind when doing red hair color:

  • Fill the hair's porosity if needed to ensure even coverage.
  • Advise your clients to wash their hair with luke warm, or cool water (warm water opens up the cuticle and causes color fade).
  • Recommend a color depositing color shampoo/conditioner to your clients to keep their color fresh.

Mix Clairol Professional Cream Color

3/4 6RN + 1/4 7N with 20 Vol

4. Try Something Different

Another big trend we've been seeing is the introduction of rainbow colored shades. Unless Katy Perry is sitting in your chair, your clients will most likely be asking for a few pieces here and there and not for a full head of pink hair.

Try some of these beautiful color combos that beg to be noticed:

  • Chocalate brunette base with deep purple accents
  • Copper red with light pink accents
  • Icy blonde with teal accents
  • Deep rich red with magenta accents
