Editorial Hair Styling - Who's Who (Part 2)

I think every hair stylist has dreamed of coiffing celebrities or working backstage at a fashion show, and for some stylists, there is an all-out drive to be doing just that. No matter what your interest level is in the land of editorial hair styling, it's exciting and fun to learn who's behind some of the top editorial looks that are on the news stands now.

1. Julien D'Ys

Julien D'ys is one of the most prolific hair stylists in the industry. His work is easily recognizable for being avante garde masterpieces that often defy gravity and evoke a sense of whimsy.

Julien is a french born hair stylist who started doing hair in the 80's during the reign of the super model. Relationships with top models and a haircut that supposedly launched Linda Evangelista's career threw Julien into the spotlight.

Julien's unique aesthetic stems for his love of art and sculpture. He is an accomplished painter, sculptor and set designer and he applies a lot of the same techniques when he's working with hair. Julien claims to hate when a designer comes to him and tells him exactly what they want. He prefers to work organically and to become inspired as he works with the hair.

2. Danilo

Danilo is a celebrity and editorial hair stylist that has had a long and ongoing relationship styling Gwen Stefani's hair and he is also the global ambassador for the Pantene hair care brand. Danilo's work can go from demure and simple to creative and chaotic.

Danilo started his career at Vidal Sassoon and then went on to work at John Dellaria in New York before becoming vice president and artistic director for Oribe. Danilo is a rare hybrid of intelligent business man and talented artist.

Be warned if you ever find yourself assisting Danilo. Once while I was assisting him on a photo shoot, he completely ignored me, reaching around me to grab pins and sprays instead of taking the ones I was holding out to him. Yikes!

3. Ted Gibson

Ted Gibson is a celebrity and editorial stylist who also owns salons in New York and Fort Lauderdale. Ted is Ashely Greene's go to stylist for events and photo shoots and numerous other starlets like Anne Hathaway, Renee Zellweger and Jessica Chastain also rely on Ted to get them red-carpet ready.

Ted hails from a small town in Texas, where he traded in his football uniform for a pair of shears. He started his career working for Aveda where he was a creative director before he left to start his own salon in NYC. Celebrity relationships with the likes of Angelina Jolie launched his editorial styling career and he shot to success with the help of his talent and laid back attitude on set.

4. Serge Normant

Serge Normant began his extensive career in Paris where he worked at the Bruno Pittini Salon before moving to New York. Serge's work has regularly graced all of the major magazine covers ever since, and he's gone on to become one of the most popular editorial stylists in the industry.

Numerous celebrities call on Serge for his talents, including Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Reese Witherspoon and Blake Lively, to name a few. You can regularly see these starlets breezing in and out of his beautiful salon that he co-owns with John Frieda in NYC.

When he's not at the salon, he's working with the top fashion photographers such as Richard Avedon, Michael Thompson, Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Meisel, Herb Ritts, Irving Penn, Annie Lebovitz, Mario Testino, Mario Sorrenti, Carter Smith and Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott.
