There's a myriad of products and treatments that we use on our skin. From cleansers, moisturizers, serums and scrubs, there's no end to the buffing and polishing products that are out on the market. There is one place that often goes un-scrubbed though - our heads.
When we exfoliate our skin, the scalp is often overlooked, but exfoliating the scalp is an important step in overall hair health. Shampoo will remove dirt and oil from the hair, but the scalp needs a little extra attention. Dirt and oil buildup can cause flakiness, irritation, and it can make you feel the need to wash your hair more often than you probably should. In fact, this process of over-washing can actually make the problem worse by drying the scalp out and causing it to produce more oil.
Introducing your clients to an exfoliating scalp product will solve these problems. Once they've used the product a few times, they'll see a huge difference in overall hair and scalp health. Some experts also agree that exfoliating the scalp can help with hair loss by stimulating blood flow to the hair follicle.
Use a scalp exfoliation product as an invigorating and relaxing treatment that you can offer in your salon. Combine the service with a conditioning treatment and head massage, and voila - a brand new menu item that you can up sell to your clientele.
Below you'll find my favorite options in scalp exfoliation products.
1. Kiehls Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment
Kiehls Deep Micro-Exfoliating Scalp Treatment is as effective as it is luxurious. Micronized Apricot and Argan exfoliators gently exfoliate the scalp and loosen flaky buildup to stimulate healthy turnover on the surface of the scalp.
If dandruff control is an issue, follow with Kiehls Scalp Purifying Dandruff Shampoo.
2. Ouidad Mediterranean Bay Leaf Exfoliating Hair & Scalp Treatment
This magnificent exfoliating cream is infused with a natural AHA complex of lemon, apple extracts and sugar cane for gentle enzymatic exfoliation as well as bamboo for manual exfoliation of the scalp. This double whammy of a product helps clear the scalp and hair follicle of buildup, and aids in the delivery of nutrients to the hair's root. A complex of bay leaf oil and rich, natural actives helps keep the scalp clean and inspires healthier hair growth. Enriched with a botanical complex of fennel seed extract, this formula increases micro-circulation and oxygen flow to the root for deeper penetration of the nurturing bay leaf oil.
Basically, this product rules.
3. Make Your Own
This one's for your crafty clients. Start with a clarifying shampoo and mix with equal amounts of a natural exfoliant like cornmeal. Add a few drops of essential oil to the mix - tea tree is stimulating and fights against dandruff, lavandar is soothing and relaxing, and peppermint is invigorating and stimulates blood flow, possibly aiding against hair loss.
Apply the mixture to the scalp, massage it in for a few minutes, and rinse. You can shampoo, if needed, or just condition. Recommend this treatment once a week for very oily hair, and twice a month for normal scalp maintenance.
4. Framesi Hair Exfoliating Treatment
This gentle exfoliating emulsion removes residue, styling products, oil and dead skin cells from the scalp. It's packed with pomegranate, shea butter, menthol and seaweed extracts to help revive and rejuvenate your scalp, allowing for healthy hair growth.
Framesi Hair Exfoliating Treatment is safe and gently enough for color treated hair, though I wouldn't use it more than a few times a month.
